CD Projekt Red officially announced a third expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt titled Songs of the Past. The expansion is scheduled for release in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, with no confirmed release date for Nintendo Switch 2 users at this time [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].

Songs of the Past stars Geralt and is described by the studio as a large expansion, comparable in scope to the acclaimed Blood and Wine expansion. "When it comes to the scope, I'd say it's actually a bit closer to Blood and Wine," said Michał Nowakowski, joint CEO of CD Projekt Red. "We're definitely making a proper big expansion." [1, 2]

The expansion is co-developed by CD Projekt Red along with Fool's Theory, a studio composed largely of Witcher veterans. This partnership continues the collaboration established on previous DLCs for the franchise [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].

The announcement was brought forward unexpectedly after images from Songs of the Past briefly leaked on the official REDlauncher platform. The studio explained on Twitter, "We originally planned to announce Songs of the Past during REDstreams tomorrow, but we found some unexpected leaks on the RED launcher so decided to reveal the news ourselves early." [6, 5]

With the upcoming expansion, CD Projekt Red also updated The Witcher 3's minimum PC system requirements. The game now requires 12 GB of RAM and 70 GB of SSD storage, reflecting technical upgrades accompanying the DLC [7].

While primarily a substantial addition to The Witcher 3, some sources suggest that Songs of the Past may serve as a prologue to The Witcher 4, although this point is disputed. Michał Nowakowski noted the expansion is meant mostly as an addition to Witcher 3, describing any connection to Witcher 4 as indirect [2]. Another source claims players will control Geralt prior to the events of Witcher 4, which will focus on Ciri [4].

The Witcher 3 has sold over 60 million copies worldwide since its 2015 release. CD Projekt Red has grown significantly since then, employing about 933 staff as of early 2026, up from 240 during the original game's development [8, 3].

The news follows a May 28, 2026, special stream celebrating the 10th anniversary of Blood and Wine, which stirred speculation about new DLC [9, 10, 6].

Songs of the Past is planned exclusively for current-generation platforms at launch, with no confirmed Nintendo Switch 2 version. However, some fans remain hopeful for a future port following optimization and potential announcement during a Nintendo Direct event [11].

CD Projekt Red emphasized the delay of the expansion's release to 2027 was to ensure a high-quality consumer experience. "We decided, together with the development team, that the game will be launching in 2027 to achieve the best possible result from the consumer standpoint," Nowakowski said [2].
