An Australian man was detained by police in Da Nang, Vietnam, after he caused significant damage to Ge Cafe during a late-night incident on May 30. [1, 2]
The man entered the cafe shirtless around 11:45 p.m. and sat down without ordering. Staff asked him to order at the counter, but he was silent or uncooperative. [1, 2] According to a statement from Ge Cafe's Facebook page, the man's behavior was erratic enough that staff called security for assistance. Before security arrived, the man suddenly stood, removed his shirt, smashed customers' phones, and demanded everyone leave within 10 seconds. [2]
The rampage escalated as the man destroyed bar equipment, furniture, customers' laptops and mobile phones, and smashed glass doors and windows inside the cafe. [1, 2] He also physically fought with some customers, including grabbing a man's neck. Many patrons fled the scene amid the chaos. [2]
Police arrived around 12:30 a.m., surrounded the cafe, and detained the man after about five minutes. [2] The damage to the cafe was estimated at about 5 billion Vietnamese dong, or approximately 26,000 Singapore dollars. [2]
During the incident, a customer lent the man a phone to help translate. The man refused to return it and laughed while browsing the phone's contents. [2]
Following the incident, Ge Cafe suspended operations for three days to clean up and repair the damage. [2] Authorities have questioned the man and continue investigating the case. [1, 2]
