Neither flight attendants nor pilots had higher death rates from cancers unrelated to radiation, supporting occupational radiation exposure rather than lifestyle factors as the main cause [1, 3]. Catherine Olsen and Ken Karipidis noted, "Non-radiation-related cancer death rates in crew are not elevated, indicating excess cases stem from occupational radiation rather than lifestyle or socioeconomics" [3].

Flight crews face annual cosmic radiation doses between 3 and 6 millisieverts—roughly 8 to 15 times the exposure of someone taking 10 round-trip cross-country flights annually [2]. Anupam B. Jena, M.D., Ph.D., explained, "As you get high up in the atmosphere, you're exposed to ionizing radiation from the sun – it's called cosmic radiation" [2].
