Damien O’Brien, 40, and Jessica O’Brien, 41, were charged with second-degree murder, torture, and three counts of second-degree child abuse in the death of their 7-year-old son, Casper O’Brien, in Flint, Michigan last November [1, 2, 3]. Casper weighed 116 kilograms at his death and measured 128 cm tall, an extreme weight for a child his age [1, 2, 3].
Authorities reported Casper was medically classified as obese, unable to speak, and bedridden with severe bedsores and rashes [2, 3]. The cause of death was dilated cardiomyopathy, with his excessive weight identified as a contributing factor [1, 2, 3]. Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said, “Clearly the parents were feeding the child improperly, to say the least. He wasn’t getting the nutrition he needed” [1].
Investigations found Casper was fed an unbalanced diet mostly consisting of fixed snacks and was denied proper medical treatment despite having health insurance [2, 3]. Casper last saw a doctor in February 2024 weighing about 47 kg, diagnosed with a cough, congestion, and a metabolic disorder, but never attended recommended pediatric endocrinology appointments [2, 3].
The O’Brien home was reportedly cluttered with trash. Casper was not enrolled in school. One of the child abuse charges also involves their 5-year-old daughter, who has since been placed in foster care [2, 3].
The couple was arraigned last week in Genesee County and held without bond. Their probable cause and preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 2, 2026 [1, 2, 3].
