The bodies of five climbers who went missing after an avalanche near Nepal's Yalung Ri peak in November 2025 have been found in early August 2026. Local residents and rescuers discovered the remains on August 6 at about 5,400 meters altitude in the Rolwaling region near the Nepal-China border, where the avalanche occurred on the lower slopes of Yalung Ri peak at around 5,630 meters altitude [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6].
The recovered bodies include two Nepali climbers and three foreigners: Marco Di Marcello, an Italian-Canadian; Markus Kirchler from Italy; and Jakob Schreiber from Germany [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. Biswash Karki, chairman of Gaurishankar Rural Municipality, confirmed, "Five bodies, three foreigners and two Nepalis, who had been missing since last November, have been discovered" [4].
The 2025 avalanche had struck a group of climbers attempting Yalung Ri in November, leading to multiple casualties. Two other team members were found dead shortly after the incident, while five climbers survived [2, 5].
Attempts to reach the site by helicopter on August 7 were hindered by bad weather. Manoj Kumar Lama, a senior local police officer, said, "Due to bad weather, our team has not been able to reach the spot. Our rescue team will airlift the bodies once the weather clears" [1, 3, 4, 6].
Dreamers Destination Treks and Expedition, which organized the climb, confirmed the recovery. Their COO Phurba Tenjing Sherpa said the bodies of foreign climbers will be handed over to families after autopsies are carried out in Kathmandu [2, 5].
The discovery ends months of uncertainty about the whereabouts of the missing climbers, found as seasonal snow melts revealed their remains. Local officials publicly announced the recovery on August 8 [4, 6].
