A viral image depicting six Thai policemen wearing sparkly, colorful dresses around a drug suspect is fake and was generated by artificial intelligence, officials confirmed yesterday [1, 2, 3]. The authentic photo shows five male officers in ordinary clothes surrounding the suspect during an arrest in Tha Luang district, Lopburi province [1, 2, 3].
Police Sergeant Rachata Mitrsuripong, who administers the Tha Luang Provincial Police Station Facebook page, posted the AI-generated image. He told reporters he created it to show a friendlier, humorous, and more approachable side of the police force. "I wanted to create a friendlier image of the police, showing a cute and humorous side, so that people would feel more comfortable approaching officers," Rachata said [1].
The arrest itself was genuine. Five male officers and one female officer disguised as a female dance troupe successfully apprehended the suspect for drug and illegal online gambling crimes [4, 5]. Police seized 53 methamphetamine pills, 211 small plastic bags likely for drug packaging, and a mobile phone linked to illegal slot gambling [4, 5].
The suspect, named "Mekha Fahwaepwaep," meaning "lightning thunder cloud" in Thai, reportedly amused the officers involved [4, 5].
This is not the first time Thai police have used costumes in operations. During February’s Chinese New Year celebrations, officers wore red-and-gold lion costumes to arrest a burglary suspect. Other playful disguises for sting operations have been reported internationally [1, 3].
Several international media outlets, including the Daily Star, Sun, Telegraph, and New York Post, initially misreported the AI image as authentic before the fakery was exposed [2]. The Guardian highlighted the challenge, noting there are no foolproof methods to verify image authenticity without direct contact with the original photographer [2].
Police Sergeant Rachata officially acknowledged the image's AI origin and shared the genuine photo with the public on May 26 [1, 3]. Authorities continue emphasizing that while creative methods are sometimes used in law enforcement, verifying images carefully remains essential amid rising AI-generated content.
The Tha Luang Provincial Police Station said no further AI images will be posted as they work to maintain transparency. Investigation and legal proceedings related to the drug and gambling arrest are ongoing [1, 4].
