Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue said on August 3 that China is currently dominating the open-weight AI model sector and could catch up to US frontier AI developers by the end of 2026 or early 2027 [1, 2, 3, 4].
Delangue attributed China’s edge to an open collaboration and sharing ecosystem around open AI models. "They're clearly dominating on open models right now... the rate of progress is much faster there than in the US, where everyone is building in silos in some of the frontier labs and not sharing with the rest of the ecosystem," he said [1, 2].
China’s AI industry reached a scale exceeding 1.2 trillion RMB in 2025, growing 40% year-on-year. As of June 2026, over 6,600 AI companies operated in China, representing about 15% of the global total [5].
