Bank of America opened a new office at Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur on April 30, 2026, marking a new phase in its Malaysian operations after more than 60 years in the country [1, 2]. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Bank of America International President Bernard Mensah, Asia-Pacific President Jin Su, and Malaysia Country Executive Gautam Puntambekar [1, 2].
The US bank first entered the Malaysian market in 1959 and provides a range of services including corporate and commercial banking, treasury and trade solutions, foreign exchange and fixed income trading, as well as investment banking in Malaysia [1, 2]. It reaffirmed its commitment to "generating profits with purpose while driving responsible growth benefiting employees, clients, and Malaysian communities" [1, 2].
The new office is located in the Merdeka 118 skyscraper, which is part of a larger development including a shopping mall slated to open in August 2026 [2]. The adjacent Merdeka 118 mall will feature an 80,000-square-foot Malaysian craft zone and a 20,000-square-foot event space called "The Atmosphere," under an 88-meter diameter glass dome [2].
PNB Merdeka Ventures, the developer and landowner behind the Merdeka 118 site as well as nearby Merdeka Stadium and National Stadium, has been managing the project since its establishment in June 2000 [2]. PNB Merdeka Ventures CEO Dato' Izzwan said the tower and mall are evolving into "one of Kuala Lumpur’s most anticipated new landmarks, seamlessly connecting retail, hotel, culture, community, and iconic attractions into a vibrant and uniquely Malaysian destination" [2].
Bank of America's new office aims to strengthen its position in Malaysia's financial sector amid the development of Merdeka 118 into a multi-use urban center. The upcoming mall opening in August 2026 will provide additional retail and cultural venues adjacent to the office [2].
