Barisan Nasional (BN) and Umno have declared they will not tolerate any breach of trust or mismanagement at Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH). They insisted that anyone found guilty of wrongdoing or poor management must be held accountable and face consequences, with Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi saying, "They must face the consequences, and I do not believe we should compromise when it comes to such wrongdoing" [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6].
The Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on TH was released on July 29, 2026. It uncovered suspicious transactions, concealment of information, and poor governance within TH between 2014 and 2020. The report revealed a RM10 billion loss in 2017 that critically harmed TH's financial position. It recommended a forensic audit of past investment decisions tied to those large losses [1, 3, 4, 5, 6].
Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin urged Umno to acknowledge shortcomings during its 2014-2017 administration of TH. He said admitting governance failures shown in the RCI report was necessary "to demonstrate a genuine commitment to reform and help restore public trust" [2, 3, 5]. But BN and Umno denied responsibility for the entire controversy, emphasizing the need to identify specific wrongdoers rather than blaming the parties as a whole. Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican stated, "An effort to put the blame on BN and Umno is, in my view, the wrong narrative" [7].
Former TH chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim said he was willing to be investigated and noted the RCI did not mention any misappropriation of depositors’ funds [7]. Meanwhile, TH has 9.7 million depositors, with 53% holding savings below RM1,300 and about 33% with amounts between RM1,300 and RM15,000. Protecting small depositors remains a priority [7].
Ahmad Zahid reaffirmed BN and Umno’s commitment to transparency and accountability ahead of a special parliamentary session set for August 11, 2026, to debate the RCI report findings. He stated, "I do not think we should compromise if such negative elements are found to have occurred. However, if the findings are otherwise, then the RCI report will merely contain recommendations" [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6].
