Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin announced the formation of a new political party, Parti Wawasan Negara, during the Reset convention held in Tanah Merah on June 13, 2026. The event drew approximately 20,000 supporters from the Reset movement [1]. The party's name was suggested by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, whom Hamzah referred to as "Ayah Chik," saying the new party’s direction depended on Hadi’s guidance: "If it is not guided and nurtured by 'Ayahanda' (referring to Hadi), and if it is not given proper direction, we do not know where it will end up" [2].
On the same day, Hamzah was reappointed Opposition Leader. PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang explained the decision by saying, "We sought the views of MPs, not just PAS. Therefore, PAS has agreed to appoint Hamzah as Opposition Leader" [3]. Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man supported the decision, citing Hamzah’s collaboration with PAS and saying, "Since he formed a new party and is working with us, we decided to retain him [Hamzah]" [4].
Hamzah’s position as Opposition Leader stems from his performance and backing among opposition lawmakers aligned with PAS and the Reset movement [4, 5]. However, the appointment process created dissent within Perikatan Nasional (PN). Bersatu information chief Datuk Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz criticized PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang for overriding the PN supreme council's decision. He described PN's decision-making as resembling a "Mullah system" [6]. Tun Faisal also faulted PN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar for inadequate leadership in preparing for upcoming state elections and for the fallout caused by PAS ending its cooperation with Bersatu [7].
Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar remains chairman of PN and was opposition leader before Hamzah’s appointment in June [8, 9, 10, 3]. PAS's central committee decided to end political cooperation with Bersatu as of June to seek a new political pact ahead of elections [7]. Many Bersatu leaders and supporters aligned with Hamzah are expected to shift gradually to Parti Wawasan Negara, but no immediate mass exodus is anticipated [11].
Parti Wawasan Negara will hold its first annual general meeting between June 13 and June 19. The party plans to contest the upcoming Johor state election on July 11 and the Negeri Sembilan state election on August 1 under the PN logo [8, 12, 2].
