Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof underwent a successful double coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery at the National Heart Institute (IJN) on August 12, 2026 [1, 2, 3]. The surgery was performed by IJN senior consultant cardiothoracic surgeons Prof Datuk Seri Dr Mohamed Ezani Md Taib and Prof Datuk Seri Dr Mond Azhan Yakub — alternatively named Prof Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Azhari Yakub by one source — together with clinical fellow Dr Ahmad Mahir Shamsuddin [1, 2, 3].
Fadillah was admitted to IJN on July 28 and had a coronary angiogram the following day before the procedure [1, 2, 3]. The surgery was conducted under IJN's Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol, aimed at early mobilisation and faster recovery [1, 2, 3].
Following the surgery, Fadillah's treatment and recovery have progressed according to plan. Prof Datuk Seri Dr Mohamed Ezani Md Taib stated, "His treatment and recovery have proceeded according to plan, and his condition continues to improve as expected by the medical team" [2].
On August 13, as part of early mobilisation, Fadillah completed 2.8 kilometres of cycling exercise supervised by the IJN clinical team [1, 2, 3]. The same day, he was transferred from the Intensive Care Unit to the general ward to continue post-CABG cardiac rehabilitation [1, 2, 3].
The anaesthesia team for the surgery included Datuk Dr Suneta Sulaiman, Dr Norhayati Anuar, and Dr Wazir Ahmad Haja Sahabudeen [2].
Fadillah serves as Deputy Prime Minister and also holds the portfolio of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister [1, 3]. His family expressed gratitude to IJN medical staff and all Malaysians for their prayers and support. The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister said, "Thank you to the ministries, mosques and surau, houses of worship, government and private agencies, non-governmental organisations, family, friends and all Malaysians who have continuously prayed for his recovery and given him their support" [3].
