Former Kedah State Assembly deputy speaker Datuk Mohd Jamil Md Idross, 78, was found dead in Sungai Teluk Bagan near Jalan Tandop, Alor Setar on Sunday morning, June 7, 2026 [1, 2, 3, 4]. Family members last saw Mohd Jamil at about 11:30 p.m. on June 6 and noticed he was missing by 5 a.m. on Sunday, after finding a pair of his slippers near the riverbank, leading them to suspect he had fallen in [1, 2, 3]. The family also confirmed he had no history of depression or psychiatric issues [1, 2, 3].
A police report was lodged at the Kota Setar district police headquarters around 7:18 a.m. Sunday [1, 3]. Emergency responders received a distress call at 7:50 a.m. and arrived shortly after 8 a.m. to find the body, which was removed to the riverbank by 8:18 a.m. [4]. Jalan Raja Fire and Rescue Station chief Assistant Fire Superintendent Wan Azizul Hakim Wan Jaafar said, "As soon as the team arrived at 8 a.m., we were informed by members of the public that a man was believed to have drowned in the river" [4].
Mohd Jamil had been discharged from hospital about a month earlier and suffered from chronic illnesses including diabetes, high blood pressure, and had been treated for a lung infection, according to Kota Setar police chief ACP Syed Basri Syed Ali. He said, "Initial investigations found that the victim had been discharged from hospital about a month ago and had a history of chronic illnesses, including diabetes and high blood pressure. He had also received treatment for a lung infection" [1].

Mohd Jamil served as Pengkalan Kundor assemblyman for UMNO from 1995-1999 and 2004-2008, and as deputy speaker of the 14th Kedah State Assembly from 2018 to 2023 [1, 2, 3].
