Singapore remains the largest and most mature data centre market in the region, with about 1.0 gigawatt (GW) of installed capacity, but its expansion is constrained by limited land, power availability, and sustainability requirements [1, 2]. Operators and hyperscale cloud providers are increasingly employing a hub-and-spoke model, using Singapore as a core node with additional capacity in nearby markets such as Johor [1, 2].
Malaysia is one of the fastest-growing data centre markets in South and Southeast Asia. Peninsular Malaysia currently maintains a solid power reserve margin of roughly 25%, supporting rapid scaling of data centre capacity [1, 2]. The country has also planned substantial investments in power generation and grid upgrades to sustain this growth [1, 2].
Johor’s integration into Singapore-linked deployment strategies gives it a competitive edge as a cost-efficient alternative for data centre investments while still serving regional and global customers effectively [1, 2]. The combination of lower costs, good power availability, and proximity to Singapore’s ecosystem draws major technology companies to Johor.
The development pipeline and recent investment by global hyperscalers indicate Johor is emerging as an essential digital infrastructure node in the region. Further growth is expected as cloud providers expand their footprint to meet rising demand for data centre capacity and services.
Microsoft and Oracle’s new cloud regions in Johor, launched within the past year, reflect increased confidence in Malaysia’s supporting infrastructure and market potential [1, 2]. These expansions complement Singapore’s mature hub and highlight the strategic role Johor plays in regional cloud deployment networks.
