Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed on August 25 that a proposal for a forensic audit into the management of the Federal Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (Felda) will be brought to the Cabinet for discussion after attending the National Maulidur Rasul Celebration at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6].
The call for the audit came earlier on August 23 from Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Zahid urged a thorough investigation into allegations of abuse of power, breach of trust, or governance failures within Felda’s management [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. He stated, "Any suspected abuse of power, breach of trust or governance failures must be thoroughly investigated. Those responsible should be brought to court if there is strong evidence, but investigations should not be used to humiliate individuals" [2].
The push for a forensic audit follows years of management issues at Felda that have resulted in reported losses close to RM10 billion. Felda was once one of the largest plantation organizations globally, generating billions in annual profits before its financial condition deteriorated significantly [2, 3, 6]. The government now pays about RM980 million yearly to cover Felda's financial obligations caused by past mismanagement [2, 3].
A special task force investigating Felda’s management has already started work. Anwar said on August 21 that he would await the task force's full report before making any official announcements on the matter. The findings are expected to be presented soon and made public in a manner similar to the Royal Commission of Inquiry report on Tabung Haji [1, 2, 3, 4, 6].
Prime Minister Anwar reinforced the Cabinet’s role by saying, "We will bring it to the Cabinet meeting for discussion" [1]. The government appears set to consider formal steps toward the proposed forensic audit once the task force completes its investigation.
The next critical development will be the release of the special task force’s findings, anticipated soon, which will shape the Cabinet’s further actions on Felda’s management issues.
