Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi assured Malaysians on August 6 that political rivalries at the state level will not affect the stability of the federal government. He made the remarks during a speech at the Rural and Regional Development Ministry's monthly assembly, emphasizing that the Unity Government was formed on a mutual understanding that remains in force until Parliament is dissolved [1, 2].
Zahid said the political developments following recent state elections in Johor and Negeri Sembilan will not alter the direction of the MADANI administration or impede the implementation of government policies and projects already planned. He explained that the coalition government’s structure allows parties to maintain their political identities and strategies, while still honoring the government-formation agreement [1, 2].
On August 1, the Negeri Sembilan state election resulted in Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) forming the state government with a two-thirds majority. Despite this state-level coalition between BN and PN, the federal Unity Government agreement remains unchanged [1].
Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil also stressed that BN-PN cooperation at the state level should be viewed separately from the federal coalition. He reiterated that the memorandum of understanding for the Unity Government was signed before the first sitting of Parliament and remains valid until the parliamentary term ends [3].
The federal Unity Government is thus expected to remain stable throughout the parliamentary term, regardless of shifting political alliances at the state level.
