Malaysia's Housing and Local Government Ministry proposed improvements to strata building management, the reintroduction of the Home Ownership Campaign (HOC), and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure for inclusion in Budget 2027. These were presented during the ministry's Budget 2027 Engagement Session held today, August 24, 2026, which gathered 350 stakeholders from various sectors [1, 2, 3].
Minister Nga Kor Ming said all proposals will be reviewed for feasibility, priorities, and the government's current financial capacity to ensure every ringgit is spent prudently and results in tangible benefits for the people [1]. He added, "This is important to ensure every ringgit allocated is spent prudently and translated into tangible outcomes, impact and benefits for the people" [3].
Other proposals raised by stakeholders include establishing a command centre to support the smart city agenda, incentives to boost recycling rates, green financing mechanisms for waste management technologies, increased grants for Volunteer Fire Brigades, healthcare facilities for the ageing population, and upgrades for urban infrastructure under safe city initiatives [1, 2, 3].
Performance data as of July 31, 2026, showed strong progress on this year’s Budget initiatives. Maintenance projects for non-Muslim houses of worship reached 304 completed versus a target of 200. Madani stall construction and upgrading projects finished 102 against a target of 60. Drainage systems upgrades achieved 154 completions against a 150 target [1, 2, 3].
Additionally, public toilet maintenance projects in local authority areas recorded 367 completions, surpassing the 50-target by 734%. The Fire and Community programme had implemented 57 of 64 programmes, achieving 89% progress [3].
The Housing and Local Government Ministry will meet with the Finance Ministry on September 3, 2026, to discuss the feasibility and prioritisation of proposals for Budget 2027 consideration [1, 2, 3].
