Malaysia experienced 7,057 job losses in April 2026, marking a 21% increase from 5,855 jobs shed in March 2026 [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]. Although this figure is lower than January's 10,658 and February's 7,512 job losses, officials said the month-to-month rise requires careful attention [2, 3, 4].
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government is working quickly to address the issue. "We have already discussed this at NEAC, and within one or two weeks I will take steps to improve the situation and provide alternative employment opportunities," he stated [5]. He acknowledged the challenge but noted, "At this stage, it is not yet alarming. But every job loss affects an individual and their family, so naturally it is troubling" [5].
The government's proposed measures include expanding skills training and focusing on emerging sectors like information technology and artificial intelligence. The prime minister said, "Right now, of course, the focus is on IT and AI, which are new and expanding fields. If necessary, we will provide special training programmes to enable these youths to enter new areas of employment" [5].
Efforts will also target improved coordination between new investments and job creation in industrial hubs along Malaysia's west coast, including Perak, Penang, Kulim Hi-Tech (Kedah), Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, and Sarawak. "There are new job opportunities and we must ensure there is synergy between incoming investments, especially along the west coast," Anwar said [5].
Economy Minister Datuk Seri Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir emphasized support for affected workers through the Employment Insurance System (SIP or LINDUNG Kerjaya) under the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso). He said, "Every single figure represents a family that has lost its source of income. The government will ensure that the Employment Insurance System functions swiftly to assist them" [4].
The latest official figures show Malaysia's unemployment rate at 2.9% and labor force participation at 70.9% as of May 2026 [4].
In a separate note, Prime Minister Anwar contributed 260 sacrificial cows to his Permatang Pauh constituency for Aidiladha celebrations [1, 7].
The government is scheduled to announce and begin implementing the new employment assistance measures within the next two weeks [1, 5, 6, 7].
