Malaysia's domestic tourism spending increased to RM121.3 billion in 2025, a 13.6% rise from RM106.7 billion in 2024. The total number of domestic visitors grew 11.5% to 290.1 million from 260.1 million the previous year [1, 2, 3].

Tourists made up 59.5% of total domestic tourism expenditure in 2025. Spending among tourists rose 14.6%, while expenditure from excursionists increased 12.2% in the same period [1, 2, 3]. The average length of stay edged up to 2.56 nights from 2.49 nights in 2024.

Land transport remained dominant, accounting for 97.5% of domestic trips in 2025, reflecting continued preference for road travel [1, 2, 3]. Regarding accommodations, 56.2% of tourists stayed with relatives and friends, while 43.8% used paid lodging. Hotels comprised 23.1% of paid accommodation usage [1, 2, 3].

Travel demand surged during major festive periods including Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Deepavali, Christmas, and school holidays. State tourism promotion campaigns under the Tahun Melawat Negeri framework, along with cultural festivals like Kaamatan and Gawai Dayak, helped boost travel activities [1, 2, 3]. Large concerts, festivals, exhibitions, sporting events, and ASEAN meetings also contributed to rises in domestic and business tourism.

Selangor was the most visited state in 2025, attracting 36.4 million visitors [1, 3]. Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said, "The increase reflects a stronger propensity among travellers to participate in domestic tourism activities and spend longer periods at destinations within the country" [2].
