Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Chang Lih Kang and Gas Malaysia CEO Azli Mohamed confirmed Malaysia's gas supply is sufficient and primarily sourced domestically during the launch of the ‘Revolutionising Industry with Graphene’ initiative June 3 [1, 2, 3].
"About 80% of electricity generation in Malaysia is supported by domestic sources, so we are not too dependent on external supplies," Datuk Chang said, adding the nation faces "no cause for major concern" over supply [1]. Gas Malaysia Bhd supplies gas to more than 1,000 customers nationwide, according to CEO Azli Mohamed [1, 3].
Azli said, "Our reliance on the Middle East is minimal. Our supply comes mainly from domestic sources and Australia. Essentially, there are no issues meeting industry demand."
Gas Malaysia Bhd relies primarily on Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Australian sources for its gas supply, keeping dependence on Middle East imports low [1, 2, 3]. Authorities continue to monitor the industry closely for any changes [1, 3].
Officials noted potential indirect challenges could arise from higher transportation costs and supply chain disruptions, which might impact sectors like the rubber industry that depend on materials from South Korea and China [1, 2, 3].
The government remains focused on maintaining a reliable gas supply and supporting key industries reliant on it. The next key development will be further monitoring of global and regional supply chain conditions to ensure continued stability.
