The Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) line, extending 37.8 kilometers from Bandar Utama in Petaling Jaya to Johan Setia in Klang via Shah Alam, is poised to begin operations by the end of June 2026 [1, 2, 3, 4]. Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook confirmed on June 15 that trial operations have been successfully completed and the system is ready for passenger service. He said, "LRT3 is expected to open by the end of this month. The specific date will be announced within the next two weeks. Trial operations have gone well and the system is ready." [1, 3]
Originally, the LRT3 project aimed for operations to commence by September 30, 2025, after surpassing 98% completion, but the launch was delayed due to system stability and software issues discovered during testing and commissioning [2, 3, 4]. The planned December 31, 2025 start date was postponed as a result. This delay has incurred liquidated and ascertained damages (LAD) totaling RM474.8 million as of the end of 2025 [2].
Setia Utama LRT 3 Sdn Bhd was awarded a RM2.47 billion contract in March 2025 to undertake reinstatement work, which includes construction on five stations and two electric bus depots along the line [2]. LRT3 is Malaysia’s largest light rail project to date [2].
Minister Loke expressed confidence that after completing all tests and trial runs, public operations can begin soon. "After various tests and trial operations are finalised, we are confident that operations can start," he said [1].
The official launch date for the LRT3 line will be announced within two weeks from June 15, 2026 [1, 3, 4]. Passenger service is expected to begin before the end of June.
