The Malaysian government will raise the maintenance allocation for all types of schools by 50%, from RM1 billion to RM1.5 billion in 2027, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced [1, 2, 3]. The additional funds will benefit national schools, Chinese and Tamil national-type schools, religious schools, tahfiz institutions, pondok schools, and special education sectors.
"Everyone is guaranteed to receive additional allocations," Anwar said, affirming the inclusive approach to school funding [1, 2, 3].
To address infrastructure needs earlier, the Ministry of Education will begin district-level visits starting September 2026. These visits will review every application for school repairs to ensure timely maintenance work [1, 2, 3].
In another education-related announcement, the Prime Minister introduced the AI for the Rakyat Programme, launching September 1, 2026. The program offers 100,000 Malaysian youths aged 18 to 30 free subscriptions to AI applications after completing training modules. Anwar highlighted that the program "includes local AI chat knowledge verified by the US-based local AI Gemini Enterprise, as well as Wonder Clip and Mul Run from China; everyone will get access starting tomorrow as soon as September 1" [2, 3].
Beyond education, initiatives include a RM1 billion allocation by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to improve digital efficiency in the public health sector. This funding targets the enhancement of electronic medical records systems and internet connectivity across hospitals and clinics [2, 3].
The government also raised the exemption threshold for e-Invoice implementation from RM1 million to RM3 million in annual sales, aiming to ease compliance burdens for smaller businesses [2, 3]. Additionally, micro-financing facilities will increase by RM1 billion, lifting the total available fund for 2026 to RM6 billion, supporting small business growth [3].
The increased school maintenance budget will take effect in 2027 while the Ministry of Education’s district visits start next month in September 2026.
