The Malaysian Army announced recruitment requirement reforms on May 18, 2026, at the Passing-Out Parade for Young Male Recruits in Port Dickson. Army chief General Datuk Azhan Md Othman said the maximum entry age has been raised from 25 to 30 years to widen the pool of eligible candidates [1, 2].
Minimum height for male candidates has been lowered from 1.62 metres to 1.57 metres. The allowable Body Mass Index (BMI) limit increased from 26.9 to 28. Additionally, applicants who wear glasses are now eligible for enlistment. These changes respond to the need for more recruits while maintaining quality and capability standards [1, 3, 2, 4].
General Azhan emphasized that the army focuses on quality, expertise, and manpower balance, not just numbers, saying the recruitment reforms "have already been implemented" to expand opportunities for qualified Malaysians. He added each candidate must go through a rigorous assessment and training to ensure they meet Malaysian Army standards [1].
Currently, the army receives over 10,000 applications annually, but only about 3,000 meet the existing criteria. The easing of entry requirements aims to increase new applications by 10% to 20%, allowing more candidates to qualify for training and service [1, 3, 2, 4].
The army also announced plans to expand female participation. Female recruitment will open in July 2026, with an estimated 350 recruits planned. General Azhan noted this will be done in a planned manner to meet operational needs and capability development. Several roles suitable for women, especially in specialized areas, have been identified to boost operational effectiveness [3, 2, 4].
The Malaysian Army supports the Armed Forces' Anti-Bullying Task Force addressing bullying culture. Since 2022, more than 10 military personnel have been disciplined or discharged for misconduct including bullying. A supervision group and committee monitor incidents, especially those occurring outside official hours. On May 13, a sergeant implicated in a fatal assault at a Pahang military camp was discharged [3, 4].
The next key event is the opening of the female recruit intake in July 2026, with around 350 spots available to increase gender diversity in the ranks [3, 2, 4].
