The Malaysian Cabinet has instructed the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) and the Ministry of Transport (MOT) to submit a detailed plan to strengthen airport security within two weeks. This action follows recent incidents involving Malaysians that exposed weaknesses in airport security controls [1, 2, 3].

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the incidents "give the impression that security controls at our airports have been breached" and emphasized that "immediate steps are being taken to draft a detailed improvement plan involving various agencies" [2].

The decision came after a Malaysian pilot was arrested following the seizure of around 25 kilograms of MDMA drugs at Indonesia's Soekarno-Hatta Airport in late July or early August 2026 [1, 2, 3]. This drug seizure intensified concerns about gaps in airport security.

To demonstrate ongoing security improvements, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution led a security familiarisation visit with 14 diplomatic representatives and ESSCOM officials to islands in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESS Zone). The delegation included ESSCOM commander Datuk Victor Sanjos and CEO Datuk Dr Jamaluddin Mohd Ali [1, 2, 3]. The Home Minister noted, "Several foreign countries, including Japan and Switzerland, have already amended their travel advisories as a result of continuous briefings and proof of stability in the local security environment" [2]. He added that the visit allowed foreign representatives "to see for themselves the state of peace and tourism potential, thereby enabling them to convey accurate, factual and balanced information to their respective countries" [2].

From January 1 to June 30, 2026, ESSCOM carried out 897,293 inspections and made 307 arrests in the ESS Zone. Enforcement actions led to 38 seizures valued at RM23.37 million. These efforts focused on controlling movement via land and maritime routes [1, 2, 3].

The federal government has allocated RM723 million over 13 years to support ESSCOM operations and ensure national sovereignty in the ESS Zone [2, 3].

The two-week deadline for the Home and Transport Ministries to submit their airport security enhancement plan started on August 7, 2026 [1].
