Malaysia’s Public Service Department (PSD) introduced an alternative pension payment channel through Touch 'n Go (TNG) eWallet to support eligible retirees who encounter difficulties accessing pensions via traditional banks [1, 2, 3, 4]. About 835,146 pensioners and their derivative beneficiaries will benefit from this initiative and expanded MyPesara Plus benefits announced on July 23 [1, 2].

More than 3.4 million verified users aged 60 and above currently use the TNG eWallet platform, highlighting its wide adoption among senior Malaysians [1, 2, 3, 4]. The PSD’s new scheme allows pensioners to apply for a fee-waived TNG eWallet Visa Card linked to their balance. This card works for payments at Visa merchants worldwide and enables cash withdrawals at ATMs [1, 2].

The move addresses a growing issue where some pensioners face frozen or restricted bank accounts, often due to financial scams, which block access to their rightful pensions [1, 2, 3, 4]. TNG Digital CEO Alan Ni expressed confidence in the program’s potential, noting, “The fact that more than 3.4 million senior Malaysians already used TNG eWallet gives us confidence that digital financial services can be both accessible and inclusive.” He added that the fee-waived Visa Card would enhance convenience and flexibility for pensioners managing daily expenses [2].

On July 30, TNG Digital reaffirmed its support for the PSD’s pension payment initiative, emphasizing the continued usage of TNG eWallet by millions of senior users [1, 2, 3, 4]. Eligible pensioners can now apply for access to the TNG eWallet pension payment channel and accompanying benefits as outlined by the PSD.
