Malaysia’s wholesale and retail trade sales reached RM168.5 billion in June 2026, marking a 10.1% increase year-on-year, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) [1, 2, 3, 4]. Wholesale trade sales rose 12.4% to RM76.8 billion, while retail trade sales climbed 6.6% to RM72 billion during the same period [1, 2, 3, 4].
The fastest growth was seen in the motor vehicle sub-sector, with sales increasing 14.9% to RM19.7 billion. Within this, motor vehicle sales jumped 22.3% to RM9.8 billion, accompanied by an 8.3% rise in parts and accessories sales and a 7% increase in maintenance and repairs [1, 3]. Motorcycle sales and related services also grew 13% year-on-year [1, 3].
Wholesale trade growth was propelled by the other specialised wholesale group, which expanded 25.3% to RM31 billion. Higher sales of petroleum products such as petrol, diesel, lubricants, and LPG supported the wholesale sector’s gains [1, 2, 3, 4]. Wholesale sales of household goods increased 6.5% to RM15.3 billion, boosted by demand for pharmaceutical, medical products, jewellery, and clothing. Sales of food, beverages and tobacco rose 4.5%, led by rice, grains, flour, sugar, dairy, and seafood [1, 2, 3, 4]. Machinery, equipment, and supplies sales grew 6.4% to RM5.7 billion, driven by telephone and telecommunications equipment [1, 2, 3, 4].
Retail growth was led by non-specialised stores, including supermarkets and department stores, which saw a 7% rise to RM28 billion. Specialised stores for other goods also expanded by 7%, reaching RM15.3 billion. Automotive fuel sales in specialised retail outlets rose 10.8%, while food, beverage, and tobacco sales grew 6.6% [1, 2, 3, 4]. Online retail sales increased 9% year-on-year in June, accelerating from 8.6% growth in May [1, 3].
DOSM attributed part of the retail spending rise to the Aidiladha festive and school holiday period extending into early June. The volume index for wholesale and retail trade increased 5.1% year-on-year and rebounded 1.3% month-on-month in June 2026 [1, 2, 3].
In manufacturing, June sales reached RM177 billion, up 9.8% year-on-year, fueled by electronics, petroleum, chemical and food sectors. Manufacturing employment rose 1.2% to 2.4 million, with salary payments increasing 3.1% to RM8.59 billion [5].
