Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has instructed the Election Commission (EC) to provide an updated report on the proposed redelineation that would increase the number of Sarawak State Legislative Assembly seats by 17, raising the total to 99 seats [1, 2, 3].
The directive came after a recent Cabinet meeting where Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri and Minister of Works Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi raised the matter [1, 2, 3]. The Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (Composition of Membership) Bill 2025 was introduced in July 2025 to formalize the addition of these new seats [1, 3].
Minister Nancy Shukri noted the EC has completed its internal procedures and the Sarawak government has given approval for the redelineation; only federal approval remains pending [2].
Government spokesman and Minister of Communications Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the prime minister is committed to implementing the redelineation once the EC finalizes its processes. He stated, "The commitment made by the Prime Minister is to implement and there is a little process that he informed the Cabinet involving the EC, and it will be implemented" [1]. He also added, "(The implementation period) has not been informed to the Cabinet because there are several things that we are waiting for from the EC" [3].
No timeline for the redelineation's implementation has been set as the Cabinet is awaiting further input from the EC [1, 2, 3].
In related preparations, Fahmi Fadzil confirmed that arrangements are underway for the upcoming Melaka state election, including securing media rooms and ensuring internet access at polling centres. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has been tasked to work with the EC on the internet requirements at these centres [1, 3].
The updated EC report on Sarawak's redelineation is pending review, with no date yet given for the subsequent federal decision or election timetable.
