Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced he will make a significant statement for the country by August 31, with follow-up announcements on September 16 and in early October during the Budget tabling [1, 2, 3, 4]. Anwar said, "I will listen and seek other views and, (by) Aug 31, I will make one important announcement for the country. Then I will go to Kuching on Sept 16 for Malaysia Day. So, on the eve of Aug 31, there will be one announcement, (then) another on Sept 16 and another in early October (during the tabling of) the Budget. So, all I can say here is that I will listen and look into the matter. If we have the capacity, we will do our best for the youth" [1].
The government is focused on safeguarding the welfare and financial security of youths working in the gig economy. Protection measures include forming the Malaysian Gig Economy Commission (SEGiM) and introducing new legislation related to small businesses [1, 2, 3, 4]. Despite concerns that current assistance is inadequate, the administration remains committed to supporting gig workers [1, 2, 3, 4].
Access to financing for graduates starting businesses will be improved, with programs like the National Entrepreneurial Group Economic Fund (Tekun) playing a key role. The existing requirement that applicants must have a business track record is due for review, reflecting changes in economic and employment landscapes [1, 2, 3, 4].
The initial important announcement from Anwar is expected by August 30, just before National Day. The second announcement will coincide with Malaysia Day celebrations on September 16 in Kuching. The third announcement will come during the early October Budget presentation [1, 2, 3, 4].
