Universiti Malaya (UM) climbed from 58th to 56th place in the QS World University Rankings 2027, marking its highest-ever ranking globally [1, 2, 3]. UM remains Malaysia's top-ranked university, placing among the top 3.7% of universities worldwide [1, 2, 3].

The ranking highlighted UM as Malaysia’s leader in academic reputation, employer reputation, employment outcomes, and sustainability [1, 2, 3]. Globally, UM ranked 56th in Academic Reputation and 61st in Employer Reputation, with scores of 92.8 and 93.1 respectively [1, 2, 3]. It stood 184th in Employment Outcomes and 166th in Sustainability [1, 2, 3].

UM also ranked 125th for International Research Network and 153rd for International Students globally. It scored 93.4 for International Research Network, 93.1 for International Students, and 83.7 for International Faculty [1, 2, 3]. UM's overall QS score for 2027 was 81.2, reflecting strengths in research, employability, sustainability, learning experience, and global engagement [2, 3].

Datuk Seri Professor Ir Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman, UM Vice-Chancellor, said the ranking was "the outcome of a university that has chosen discipline over complacency, execution over rhetoric, and collective purpose over mere conventional normalcy" [1]. He added, "It affirms that when strategic vision is matched with clarity, cohesion, courage, and sustained action, UM will not merely participate in the global higher education landscape, we are there to define it" [1]. He also described the success as reflecting "the strength of a mission-led institution powered by academics, researchers, students, staff and leadership teams" [2].

Malaysia's second highest-ranked university, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), rose six places to 128th globally. USM ranked 61st for International Students and 100th in International Research Network—its highest standing in that category among Malaysian universities [4, 5]. USM Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Seri Ir Dr Abdul Rahman Mohamed attributed the success to the dedication of staff, researchers, students, alumni, and support personnel committed to raising USM's global reputation [4].

Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) improved to the 701-710 band globally from 801-850, placing it among the top 47% of universities worldwide [6]. UMT scored 63.9 in sustainability, ranking it among the top 10 institutions worldwide for that indicator. The university had a citation index of 159.5 citations per faculty member, well above the global median of 59.9, and a graduate employability rate of 92.1% [6]. UMT Vice-Chancellor Dr Mohd Zamri Ibrahim said the achievement would "serve as a catalyst for the university to further strengthen its culture of research and innovation, enhance international visibility and expand its network of strategic partnerships" [6].

The QS World University Rankings 2027 evaluated 8,808 institutions globally, with 1,504 included in the final rankings. Malaysia had 32 universities evaluated this year [2, 4, 3, 5].

UM will celebrate its 121st anniversary in 2026, reflecting over a century of academic contributions [2, 3].
