Nurhaswani Afni Mohamad Zorki, 42, was fined RM500 after pleading guilty to using criminal force against Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak during the Perak National Day celebration on August 31, 2025 [1, 2]. The incident occurred at about 8:20 a.m. in front of the Ipoh City Council building on Jalan Panglima Bukit Gantang, where Nurhaswani climbed onto the royal dais and grabbed the Sultan, nearly causing him to lose his balance [1, 2].
Authorities found that Nurhaswani deliberately dressed in black to resemble a security officer in order to gain access to the royal dais during the event [1]. She was subsequently charged under Section 352 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of three months imprisonment, a fine of up to RM1,000, or both [1, 2].
Nurhaswani has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and underwent psychiatric assessment and observation at Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta following a court order on September 8, 2025 [2]. Despite her condition, she was found fit to stand trial [1, 2]. Her defense counsel, Datuk Naran Singh, stated that this was her first offence and noted her history of treatment for schizophrenia [2].
On July 6, 2026, the Magistrates' Court in Ipoh sentenced Nurhaswani to pay a RM500 fine. The court ordered one month imprisonment if the fine is not paid, and refunded her bail [1, 2]. Deputy public prosecutor Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani said, "The punishment should serve as a reminder to the public not to commit similar acts" [2].
Nurhaswani was represented pro bono by Datuk Naran Singh [1, 2]. The case closes with the payment of the fine or its substitution with imprisonment should she fail to comply.
