A house fire in Taman Serai Maju, Bagan Serai on August 15 killed a Rohingya father and his two young sons early Sunday morning [1, 2, 3].
The victims were identified as 27-year-old Mohd Yunus Nor Ali and his sons Muhammad Woheed Mohd Yunus, 6, and Mohamad Aheed Mohd Yunus, 3 [1, 2, 3]. Yunus’ wife and the boys’ mother, 24-year-old Saniya Jahan Juma Abul Kasim, suffered burns to her hands and feet and was hospitalized following the blaze [1, 2, 3].
Emergency services received a call reporting the fire at 5:17 am, and firefighters arrived by 5:30 am to find the Class A house about 70% engulfed in flames [1, 2, 3]. The house, measuring approximately 20 feet by 40 feet, was home to seven foreign nationals [2, 3].
During the rescue operation, firefighters found the victims burned inside the first room of the house [1, 2, 3]. Datuk Sayani Saidon said, "Based on the information and initial findings by the JBPM forensic team, the fire started in the first room, which is where the victims were found burned. The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are still under investigation" [2].
The fire was brought under control at 6:20 am, and the firefighting operation ended at 7:35 am [1, 2, 3]. A total of 24 firefighters, 6 volunteer firefighters, 7 policemen, and 3 Health Ministry personnel participated in the emergency response [1].
The bodies of the father and sons were pronounced dead at the scene and handed over to police for further action [1, 2, 3]. Investigations by the Fire Forensics Unit and relevant authorities are ongoing to determine the fire’s cause and exact losses [1, 2, 3].
