A tornado-like storm struck the MPL Housing residential area near Tanjung Aru in Labuan at about 9:40 pm on May 12, causing damage to 33 houses and injuring one man [1, 2].

The 64-year-old injured victim, Wong Kwet Kiong, suffered head injuries after being hit by flying debris during the intense winds [1, 2]. The storm brought strong winds that ripped off rooftops, damaged several vehicles, and uprooted large trees across the neighborhood [1, 2].

Labuan Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call at 10:12 pm and quickly dispatched a fire engine with eight personnel to the scene [1, 2]. Upon arrival, firefighters found the area in darkness due to a power outage, with roads blocked by scattered debris and fallen objects [1, 2]. Firefighters focused on clearing roads and removing debris to restore access and ensure safety [1, 2].

Several vehicles parked near damaged houses were also affected by the storm's force, as many large trees were uprooted by the winds [1, 2].

Resident Azahar Aziz, 36, described how the storm began with rain and lightning before the winds grew strong. "When we noticed the winds getting stronger, we quickly closed the windows. Not long after that, the roof was blown away and the house was flooded. We are now staying at a relative’s house," he said [1, 2].

Following the damage, many residents moved to relatives’ homes for temporary shelter while cleanup efforts are ongoing [1, 2].

The fire department continues clearing debris and assessing damage in the affected area. Local authorities have yet to announce further response plans or recovery schedules.
