Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, chairman of Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Terengganu Menteri Besar, was appointed the new parliamentary opposition leader on May 16, 2026. The Perikatan Nasional Supreme Council made the decision at a meeting held that day [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].

Ahmad Samsuri replaces Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, the Larut MP, who stepped down after being expelled from the Bersatu party in February 2026 [1, 2, 6, 3, 7, 8, 4, 5, 9]. Ahmad Samsuri is also the Kemaman MP, holding dual roles simultaneously as opposition leader and Terengganu Menteri Besar [1, 2, 3, 7, 10, 4, 11, 5, 9].

PN secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan announced, "We have agreed to appoint Ahmad Samsuri, who is also the Kemaman MP, as the Opposition Leader (in the Dewan Rakyat)" and unveiled other PN state chapter leaders except for Negeri Sembilan [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9]. The meeting also agreed in principle to accept electoral cooperation with certain aligned parties [1, 2, 3, 4].

Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali described the appointment as "highly strategic" and said Bersatu MPs will support Samsuri's leadership to continue the parliamentary opposition's role as a check and balance [7]. Conversely, DAP adviser Lim Guan Eng criticized the dual role appointment, questioning PAS' leadership depth and the practicality of holding both offices. He said, "The question arises whether PAS has no capable leader apart from Ahmad Samsuri to shoulder these two responsibilities by wearing 'two hats' as Opposition Leader and Terengganu Menteri Besar. Both positions carry heavy duties and responsibilities. Either one alone would require full focus and commitment" [10].

Lim highlighted Samsuri’s parliamentary attendance rate of 63.7 percent, having attended 158 out of 248 sitting days, as a concern for his ability to manage both roles effectively. He asked, "If he attends Parliament every sitting day, would he still be able to fully carry out his duties as Menteri Besar while being absent from Kuala Terengganu?" [10, 11].

Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said it was too early to evaluate Samsuri’s performance, noting the appointment was just announced on May 16. He said the government will observe and assess his work in all positions, including opposition leader [8].

Malaysia’s Dewan Rakyat (House of Representatives) will reconvene in June 2026, offering the new opposition leader a platform to take on his parliamentary role [1, 2, 4].
