Malaysia’s Federal Court is set to deliver its judgment on June 30, 2026, in the prosecution’s final appeal against the Court of Appeal’s acquittal of Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman on charges including criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of property, and money laundering. Syed Saddiq was convicted by the High Court on November 9, 2023. He received a sentence of seven years’ imprisonment, two strokes of the cane, and a RM10 million fine. [1, 3, 4, 5] The Court of Appeal overturned that conviction on June 25, 2025, acquitting him unanimously after finding the prosecution failed to prove dishonest intention, abetting criminal breach of trust, or wrongful gain or loss. The Federal Court panel hearing the appeal is chaired by Court of Appeal president Datuk Seri Abu Bakar Jais, and includes judges Datuk Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali and Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah. If the Federal Court restores Syed Saddiq’s conviction, he risks losing his eligibility to remain an MP or contest elections under Article 48(1)(e) of the Federal Constitution. [1, 3, 5] Defense lawyer Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik said he trusts the Federal Court will reject the appeal, citing the strength of the Court of Appeal ruling. Lead prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin said he has fulfilled his duty and will respect the court’s decision. "I have done my best in the interest of justice. Whatever the outcome, I leave it to the court," he stated. [2, 4]
The Federal Court’s ruling will conclude the long-running legal battle that has lasted since the initial High Court conviction in late 2023.
