Lawyer and opposition politician Lim Tean was arrested by the Royal Malaysia Police in Johor Bahru on August 6, 2026, after failing to surrender in Singapore to serve a jail sentence [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. He was ordered by Singapore’s Court of Appeal to surrender on August 3, 2026, following a deferral from an original surrender date of July 20, 2026 [1].
Lim was sentenced to three months and one week in jail after the High Court increased his sentence in February 2026 on a prosecution appeal. The jail term relates to charges of practising law without a valid practising certificate after he attended court hearings and submitted documents 32 times between April and June 2021 [1, 3, 4, 5, 6].
He was initially convicted in July 2024 and sentenced to six weeks’ jail and a S$1,000 fine in February 2025 by Senior District Judge Ong Hian Sun [1, 3, 4, 5, 6]. Lim was also fined $30,000 in April 2026 in a separate disciplinary case involving handling a client’s cheque, and was declared bankrupt in the same month [1, 3, 4, 5].
Two Singaporean men, Mohammad Adam Abd Karim, 44, and Sulaiman Muhammad Firdaus, 37, were charged in Singapore on August 8 with conspiracy to defeat the course of justice for allegedly helping Lim flee Singapore to Johor [2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. Preliminary investigations showed they arranged for Lim to illegally leave Singapore on August 4 [2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. They face up to seven years’ jail, a fine, or both if convicted [2, 3, 4, 5, 6].
Lim Tean is founder of the Peoples Voice party and secretary-general of the People’s Alliance for Reform, which is an alliance of opposition parties in Singapore [1, 6]. On August 14, the court will hear the cases against the two men accused of aiding his escape [3, 4, 5].
