Israeli forces intercepted and detained more than 100 activists aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian mission heading to Gaza, on May 18-19 in international waters near Cyprus [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. The flotilla originally set sail from Marmaris, Turkey, on May 14, consisting of between 54 and 60 vessels [3, 4, 5]. Israeli officials said they intercepted and detained individuals aboard 41 vessels [3, 4].

Among those detained were 16 Malaysians across nine vessels, while four Malaysians remain at sea continuing their voyage toward Gaza [1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 5]. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim declared, "Malaysia strongly condemns this and demands guarantees for the safety and immediate release of all detained activists. The world should not continue to bow to oppression and moral decay. The persecution of Palestinians and those delivering humanitarian aid must end immediately. Israel must face justice and accountability" [5]. Malaysia officially lodged a strong protest against Israel over the detention of its citizens, with Anwar stating, "We have lodged a strong protest" [7, 8].

Israel defended its actions by citing enforcement of the legal naval blockade of Gaza and said it would not tolerate attempts to break it [3, 4]. Several countries and international organizations have condemned Israel’s interception of the flotilla as violations of international law [3, 9, 4, 5]. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called the treatment of flotilla detainees "abominable," criticizing Israel sharply and referencing footage shared by Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir [9].

The original flotilla departure on May 14 from Marmaris marked a coordinated effort by activists to deliver humanitarian support to Gaza amid ongoing conflict [4, 5]. On May 19, alongside Malaysia’s diplomatic protest, Canada publicly condemned Israel’s handling of detained activists [9, 7, 8].

Despite the detentions, about 10 flotilla vessels remain at sea heading toward Gaza [3, 4]. The situation continues to develop as Malaysia and other nations press Israel for the immediate release and safety of all detained activists [1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 5, 8].
