Malaysia started a phased rollout of its New Structure MyKad with enhanced security features in June 2026 at the National Registration Department (NRD) headquarters in Putrajaya and 18 other selected offices using an appointment system to manage demand and avoid congestion [1, 2, 3].

The new MyKad includes 53 security elements, more than double the 23 features found in the current version. These enhancements cover QR codes for verification, holograms, microtext, ultraviolet features, laser engraving, and a chip with advanced encryption technology [1, 2, 3]. National Registration Department director-general Datuk Badrul Hisham Alias said, "The New Structure MyKad will feature 53 security elements, compared with 23 in the current version." [2]

The original MyKad was introduced on September 5, 2001, as Malaysia's national identity smart card. It evolved from earlier paper cards starting in 1948, moving to plastic cards in the 1960s, high-quality cards in the 1980s, and a chip upgrade in 2012 [1, 2, 3]. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stated, "The next-generation MyKad is intended to strengthen the national identity system through the adoption of improved technology and security features." [1]

Holders of Plastic Identity Cards (KPP), High-Quality Identity Cards (KPT), and Version 1 MyKad cards must replace them with the New Structure MyKad within three years in stages, according to the National Registration Department [2]. The department noted, "Holders of KPP, KPT and Version 1 MyKad are required to replace their cards with the New Structure MyKad in stages within three years." [2]

Despite the rollout, existing MyKad cards remain valid for all official transactions, including subsidy redemptions and government assistance programs, during the transition period [1, 2, 3]. The phased implementation aims to ensure a smooth process and prevent bottlenecks at service counters [1, 2, 3].

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to officially launch the new MyKad, but the date has not yet been announced [1, 2, 3].
