Malaysia Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim congratulated C. Joseph Vijay, known as Vijay, after he became chief minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday. Anwar called the victory historic and said the people of Tamil Nadu had placed great trust in him. [1, 2, 3]
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Anwar said he warmly congratulated his friend Vijay on being elected chief minister and said Oru Viral Puratchi, or the "one-finger revolution," was now on the cusp of creating history. He also said Malaysia and Tamil Nadu share deep historical, cultural and people-to-people ties across generations. [1]
Vijay replied that he was deeply honoured by Anwar's message and thanked him for the congratulations. He said he remained committed to fostering greater cooperation and strengthening the bond of friendship between Tamil Nadu and Malaysia. [4, 5]
R. Ramanan also sent congratulations to Vijay and compared his political journey with Anwar's long struggle. Reports said Vijay's party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, won 108 seats in the April state election. That fell short of the 118 seats needed for a simple majority in the 234-member assembly, and several reports said the party later secured support from other parties to form the government. [6, 2, 3]
The state election results were announced on 2026-05-04, and Vijay was sworn in on Sunday. [3, 6, 2]
