Tony Pua sparked controversy in May after publicly mocking a decree issued by Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor, which suggested that Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki and former Selangor exco Ronnie Liu visit the Rukun Negara Monument Plaque to appreciate its meaning [1, 2, 3].
Pua stated Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy where rulers only have specific powers relating to Malay customs, Islam, and constitutional functions such as appointing the Menteri Besar. He emphasized his loyalty to the King and country but said he upholds the rule of law based on the Federal Constitution rather than on royal decrees alone [1, 2].
Umno Secretary-General Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki condemned Pua’s remarks as disrespectful toward the royal institution. He said, "Claiming to be constitutionally literate, yet lacking basic respect for the royal institution. When a Sultan's decree is mocked, that is not freedom of speech, it is sheer disrespect. Tony Pua has clearly forgotten his manners and boundaries. Umno stands with Tuanku!" [1, 3]
Political leaders from both governing and opposition parties joined in defending the monarchy and criticizing Pua [3]. PKR's Kuala Langat youth wing chief Mohd Shah Rezza Mohd Tuniman stressed respect for the monarchy as a cornerstone of state sovereignty and unity. He said, "The royal institution is not merely a symbol of tradition but a pillar of state sovereignty and an umbrella of unity for Malaysians of diverse races and backgrounds. Therefore, any statement touching on this institution must be made with full responsibility, care and awareness of its implications on public harmony." [3]
Mohd Shah also warned Pua not to cross a "red line" with remarks about the royal institution, saying, "Be warned Tony Pua, do not overstep your bounds. Do not cross the red line." He added that mature politics balances freedom of expression with social responsibility [3].
The controversy began after the Selangor Sultan issued his decree in May [1, 2], followed by Pua’s public comments and subsequent condemnation from Umno and other political figures the same month [1, 2, 3]. Tony Pua’s statements remain a focus of political debate over the role and limits of royal authority in Malaysia’s constitutional monarchy.
