Malaysian police are probing allegations of criminal intimidation against former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki. The allegations were made by businessman Albert Tei, who lodged a police report on May 13, 2026, accusing Azam of threats through a lawyer intermediary under Section 506 of the Penal Code [1, 2, 3, 4].
Police have recorded statements from Albert Tei and his lawyer, who is alleged to have conveyed the threats. The investigation is approaching completion and will soon be referred to the Attorney General's Chambers for further action [1, 5, 4]. Bukit Aman police confirmed they will summon Azam Baki to assist in their inquiries next week [6, 7].
Azam Baki has denied all accusations, calling them baseless and stating he has never communicated with Tei or instructed a lawyer to approach him. "Honestly, I have never dealt with him, never communicated with him, and never sent my lawyer to speak with him," Azam said [2]. He added, "The allegations made against me are completely baseless and have tarnished my reputation. I am considering suing him and will discuss the matter with my lawyers first" [8]. He welcomed the police investigation and said he would cooperate fully [9].
The case centers in part on a November 28, 2025, raid on Albert Tei's home by seven or eight masked and armed MACC officers. Tei alleges he was restrained with cable ties, his family intimidated, and officers insulted and humiliated him during the operation. Officers also reportedly forced Tei's wife to delete a video of the raid and seized CCTV footage from the residence [10, 11, 9].
Tei alleges the intimidation was linked to his attempts to expose corruption involving Sabah politicians, though Azam has denied any involvement or communication with Tei [1, 5, 3, 4, 9]. Police have stated the investigation is ongoing. Datuk M Kumar of the police said, "Further investigations into this case are still being carried out transparently and the police require some time to complete them before any conclusions are made" [1]. Kumar added that contact has been made with Azam and a meeting will be arranged soon [6].
Azam is expected to meet Bukit Aman police this week to give a statement and aid the investigation [6, 7].
