Malaysian police opened an investigation into a viral street brawl involving locals at Jalan Rawang-Batu Arang near Rawang. The incident was recorded on video and uploaded around 6 p.m. on May 16. A police report was lodged on May 18 at 4:24 p.m. by the Gombak district police headquarters, and the case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting in a public place. If convicted, offenders could face up to two years in prison, fines, or both, according to Senior Assistant Commissioner Noor Ariffin Mohamad Nasir, who confirmed the investigation venue and legal provisions involved [1, 2].
Meanwhile, separate police probes are underway over alleged harassment of media practitioners at the Pakatan Harapan (PH) Convention held on May 24 at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre in Johor Bahru. Top leaders including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and several senior ministers attended the event [3].
The Malaysian Media Council called for a transparent and immediate investigation after reports emerged of aggressive behavior by security personnel towards media covering the convention. The council said, "Physical violence, intrusion or intimidation are entirely unacceptable as a response to the presence of the media" [4].
The Johor Media Club also filed a police report on May 25 citing physical and verbal confrontations that obstructed media personnel while they worked. The club described the situation as uncontrolled and harmful to journalists’ safety [3].
Police received a separate complaint from a 32-year-old woman who said she was shoved by a black-clad group during the gathering. Deputy Commissioner Hoo Chuan Huat said, "Several videos of the incident were uploaded on social media. Police are conducting further investigations and several witnesses will be called to assist in the probe" [5].
Pakatan Harapan Convention director Datuk Fahmi Fadzil expressed regret over the reported harassment and announced a full review. "I have instructed the PH Convention secretariat to look into the complaint thoroughly and identify the actual issues involved, including any individuals who may have been responsible, so that appropriate action can be taken," he said on May 26 [6, 7].
Authorities continue to investigate both the Rawang street brawl and the media harassment claims linked to the PH Convention.
