Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Bersatu president and Pagoh MP, urged the Malaysian government on August 11 to carry out a thorough, independent forensic audit of Tabung Haji’s management and complete it within one year [1, 2, 3]. He said the audit is essential to trace fund flows and uncover any fraud, abuse of power, or negligence that contributed to the management failures [1, 2, 3].

The call follows findings by the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) that exposed deep governance weaknesses at Tabung Haji, including political interference, improper profit distribution, and creative accounting that concealed losses [1, 2, 3]. The RCI estimated that Tabung Haji suffered between RM10 billion and RM12.6 billion in cumulative losses from 2014 to 2020 [1, 2, 3]. The commission found that in 2017, Tabung Haji should have recorded a net loss of RM1.4 billion rather than a reported RM3.4 billion profit under Malaysian Financial Reporting Standards [1].

Critical investment decisions involving billions of ringgit were made without proper risk assessments, exposing depositors’ funds to significant jeopardy [1]. Muhyiddin stressed that anyone responsible for causing losses, be it through fraud, abuse of power, or negligence, must be held accountable. "Anyone responsible for causing losses to TH funds, whether through fraud, abuse of power or negligence, must be brought to justice," he said [1]. He urged the government to address governance and accountability issues to restore public confidence [1, 2, 3].

In response to the RCI findings, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (MUDA-Muar) called for the formation of a Multi-Agency Task Force including the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), police, and Inland Revenue Board to investigate 14 problematic Tabung Haji investments identified in the report. He also urged the task force to expand investigations to related entities such as Felda, FGV, and Eagle High. "So that ultimately we can find out who caused these problems and establish the losses that resulted," Syed Saddiq said [2, 3].

Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad (BN-Simpang Renggam) proposed that MACC, police, and other agencies provide regular updates on investigations stemming from the RCI report. He also called for parliamentary oversight on the implementation of all RCI recommendations [2, 3].

The government is now expected to initiate the forensic audit and set up investigative mechanisms following Muhyiddin’s address to the Dewan Rakyat on August 11 [1, 2, 3].
