Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has not given any indication that Malaysia's 16th general election (GE16) will occur this year, Pakatan Harapan (PH) leader Fahmi Fadzil said on May 14. "The prime minister has not given any signal that the 16th general election will happen this year," Fahmi told reporters, noting the government's focus remains on governance and reforms [1, 2].

Anwar Ibrahim continues to prioritise addressing public issues and implementing reforms before any election event, Fahmi added. He stressed that while there is no confirmed date for GE16, leaders and members of parliament have been advised to remain prepared for any possibility [2]. "There is no indication from the prime minister, but he has reminded leaders and members of parliament to always be prepared for any possibility," Fahmi said.

The PH coalition is actively preparing for potential state elections, including in Johor and Melaka. Fahmi stated, "While we know Johor may face elections, perhaps not now, it is not impossible in the not-too-distant future" [2]. The coalition held a national convention on May 17 in Johor to lay out its electoral strategy and ready its machinery for possible state polls [1, 2].

Fahmi noted that PH leaders, especially Cabinet members, are focused on making reforms work effectively. "The focus of leaders, especially those serving in the Cabinet, is to ensure that our plans to bring about change and reform can be implemented as effectively as possible," he said [2].

According to parliamentary rules, GE16 must be held by February 2028 at the latest unless Parliament dissolves earlier, with automatic dissolution scheduled for December 2027 [2].

The next key political milestone will be closely watching any state election announcements, particularly in Johor and Melaka, while the federal government continues its policy agenda in the lead-up to the mandatory election deadline.
