The 16th Negeri Sembilan state election will be held on August 1, 2026, with nomination day on July 18 and early voting on July 28. Pakatan Harapan (PH), Barisan Nasional (BN), and Perikatan Nasional (PN) have all announced their candidate line-ups in advance of the polls [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].
PH unveiled 36 candidates on July 14, including fresh faces and experienced politicians from PKR, DAP, and Amanah [6]. PH chairman and Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun will contest the Linggi seat, taking on BN's incumbent Datuk Mohd Faizal Ramli. Aminuddin aims to win to keep the state stable and continue progress, highlighting economic gains including RM19.1 billion in investment and increased zakat collection from RM80 million to nearly RM200 million. "We need to win to ensure Negeri Sembilan remains stable... the state's performance has continued to improve because of a stable government," Aminuddin said [7, 8, 9, 4].
DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke will defend his Chennah seat for PH. Loke acknowledged the possibility of BN and PN cooperation against PH but emphasized PH’s focus on unity among its component parties and its strengths. "We have already anticipated this... PH will focus on our own strengths to win the seats we are contesting," he said [7, 8, 10].
BN confirmed a slate of 25 candidates announced between July 15 and 16, with MCA contesting 7 seats and MIC 4 seats in the state. BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed confidence in forming the next state government though no explicit seat targets were set. Mohamad Hasan, defending the Rantau seat, acknowledged the challenge of the Linggi contest where Faizal will face Aminuddin. "It will be a tough contest, and we must manage our campaign well," he said [1, 11].
PN announced 11 candidates from PAS, Wawasan, Gerakan, and MIPP, all contesting under the Perikatan Nasional coalition logo. However, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin said Bersatu will contest independently using its own logo, rejecting PN's seat allocation and cooperation arrangement. PN supreme council chairman Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar stated PN aims to champion welfare, development, and harmony in the state, asserting all PN candidates will use the coalition logo. This marks a notable split in PN’s campaign approach [3, 5].
Other parties include Parti Orang Asli Malaysia contesting Jeram Padang and Parti Sosialis Malaysia contesting Rahang [2]. Muda will not participate in this state election [2].
Prime Minister and PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim stressed the need to avoid politicizing royal institutions and constitutional matters during campaigns. He expressed confidence in Aminuddin’s leadership and urged fair political debate. "We can engage in political battles, but we cannot spread slander... let us not undermine the institutions that form the foundation of the country," Anwar said [6].
The campaign period enters a critical phase as all candidates finalize strategies ahead of nomination day on July 18, with early voting set for July 28 and the full election on August 1, 2026 [1, 2, 3, 4].
