The site for a new 500-bed public hospital in Petaling Jaya was officially finalised following a high-level coordination meeting held on May 14 with federal, state, and local agencies involved [1, 2, 3]. The new hospital will adopt a vertical design similar to Ampang Hospital, allowing for efficient land use and cost reduction [1, 2, 3].
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said, "The site location accepted by MOH is highly suited to the needs of Petaling Jaya residents, particularly in terms of access, capacity, land cost, and proximity to the local population" [2]. The hospital aims to serve the 2.3 million residents in the Petaling district, including over 800,000 in Petaling Jaya alone [1, 2, 3].
Currently, residents rely on Sungai Buloh Hospital (1,037 beds), Shah Alam Hospital (490 beds), and University Malaya Medical Centre (946 beds) for treatment [1, 3]. To relieve congestion, Selangor has improved healthcare infrastructure in recent years with Cyberjaya Hospital (288 beds) and Tanjong Karang Hospital (150 beds) completed in 2022, and Kapar Hospital (312 beds) expected to finish later in 2026 [1, 2, 3].
The state government launched the site search in 2018 to ease strain on these hospitals and said it will expedite land administration processes to allow timely construction [1, 2, 3]. Kampung Tunku assemblyman Lim Yi Wei urged swift action on land rezoning and budget approval, warning, "Healthcare must remain a public good: undisturbed by austerity and protected from profiteering" [4]. She also called for interim solutions to improve healthcare access while addressing staffing and systemic issues [4].
Separately, Hulu Selangor PKR leader Dr N. Sathia Prakash stressed the need for balanced healthcare development across Selangor. Citing rural and semi-urban communities in Hulu Selangor with 300,000 people facing long travel times, he said, "In healthcare, time is life," and called for a large specialist hospital in the area to meet rising demand [5]. While welcoming the Petaling Jaya hospital plan, he cautioned against sidelining rural health needs [5].
Selangor Menteri Besar announced the hospital site finalisation on May 27 and confirmed plans to fast-track land approvals for construction [2]. Kampung Tunku assemblyman made her appeal for urgent government commitment on May 28 [4]. Construction timelines have not been publicly detailed.
