Muhammad Fakrul Aiman Sajali, 23, was sentenced to death by the Klang High Court on October 15, 2025, for murdering and burning his 21-year-old pregnant girlfriend, Nur Anisah Abdul Wahab. The crime took place between 8:30 pm on May 22 and 8 am on May 23, 2023, at Jalan Sungai Limau [1, 2].

The charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code carries either the death penalty or 30 to 40 years imprisonment plus a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane [1, 2]. The Klang High Court considered the crime serious, cruel, and premeditated, justifying the death sentence [2].

However, on May 14, 2026, a Court of Appeal panel led by Datuk Azman Abdullah, with Datuk Ahmad Kamal Md Shahid and Datuk Seri Mohd Radzi Harun, commuted Muhammad Fakrul’s death sentence to 40 years imprisonment and 12 strokes of the cane. The sentence is to take effect from his arrest date, May 23, 2023. The appeal court cited his young age and the Abolition of Mandatory Death Penalty Act 2023 as grounds for reducing the sentence [1, 2].

Muhammad Fakrul is currently serving his sentence at Kajang Prison. Muhammad Nor Tamrin said Muhammad Fakrul "accepts the decision of the Court of Appeal panel of judges because he considers the judgment... to be fair, just and free from any error that requires further challenge" [2]. He did not file a cross-appeal.

On May 25, 2026, the prosecution filed a notice of appeal at the Federal Court seeking to reinstate the original death sentence [1, 2]. The Federal Court is now set to review the prosecution’s appeal.

The legal proceedings continue as the Federal Court considers whether to uphold the commutation or restore the death penalty for the convicted man.
