Two Malaysian Army personnel died on June 16, 2026, after a grenade explosion during a training exercise at Hobart Camp firing range in Gurun, Kedah [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11]. Both soldiers sustained serious injuries while participating in a grenade-throwing exercise as part of the Royal Engineers Regiment Combat Enhancement Training under the 2nd Infantry Division [1, 2, 4, 7, 11]. The blast occurred around 10:57 a.m., prompting an urgent response [4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11].

They were rushed to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungai Petani but were pronounced dead en route [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11]. Police were notified about the incident at 12:30 p.m. and have classified the case as sudden death [3, 4, 5, 8].

The Malaysian Army immediately suspended all grenade-throwing training at Hobart Camp to allow for an investigation [1, 2, 6, 7, 10, 11]. Army Chief General Tan Sri Azhan Md Othman said, "Grenade exercises have been immediately stopped to allow space for investigations to be conducted. The cause of the incident will be investigated by a committee that has been set up. Follow-up actions will be based on the findings of the investigation" [1]. He added, "The army gives its assurance that all aspects of training safety will continue to be given priority, and improvements will be made based on the findings" [4].

The training was part of routine combat enhancement and operational readiness drills for the Royal Engineers Regiment under the 2nd Infantry Division [1, 2, 4, 11].

Army chief Azhan Md Othman confirmed on June 17 that investigations are ongoing and full assistance, including compensation, will be provided to the families of the deceased soldiers [1, 2, 6, 7, 10, 11].
