The 2026 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix is set to be held at Malaysia's Sepang International Circuit from October 2 to 4, marking the first time the race will take place outside Bahrain since its debut in 2004 while retaining its official title [1, 2, 3]. The relocation follows the postponement of the original Bahrain Grand Prix at Sakhir planned for April 2026 due to ongoing regional conflicts in the Middle East [4, 5].
Tourism Malaysia expects the event to substantially benefit the local economy, projecting increases in hotel bookings, transportation use, and food and beverage sales. Datuk Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim, Tourism Malaysia's director-general, said, "We expect significant economic spillover, particularly through increased hotel bookings, transport services, and food and beverage spending" [1].
In line with government directives, Tourism Malaysia will organise a large F1 Carnival alongside the race weekend to attract visitors from neighbouring countries such as Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia. Rahim added, "Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has directed us to organise a large-scale carnival alongside the F1 event to attract many visitors from Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia" [4].
The event closely precedes the Singapore Grand Prix from October 9 to 11, 2026, creating synergy for regional tourism. Rahim noted, "Singapore is our friendly neighbour, and this dual-race window allows us to support each other’s tourism goals – especially as we promote Visit Johor Year 2026" [1]. Historically, the Singapore night race has driven cross-border tourism to Johor state, a trend expected to continue this year [1, 4].
The shift to Sepang reflects strong bilateral ties between Malaysia and Bahrain, including at the royal and political leadership levels. Bahrain Ambassador to Malaysia Dr Waleed Khalifa Al Manea said, "It reflects the high level of trust and cooperation between the two countries and represents another important step in strengthening bilateral relationship." He added, "It is unique because it brings together Bahrain's leadership and experience in motorsport with Malaysia's extensive experience and strong reputation in hosting Formula 1 and other world-class sporting events" [2].
Ahead of the event, Gulf Air will launch direct flights between Bahrain and Kuala Lumpur to facilitate travel [2, 3]. Hotels in Sepang, Putrajaya, and Kuala Lumpur are already nearing full capacity. Rahim stated, "Hotels in Sepang, Putrajaya, and Kuala Lumpur are already almost fully booked" [4].
The 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang will run from October 2 to 4, followed by the Singapore Grand Prix from October 9 to 11 [1, 6]. The combined schedule aims to maximize regional tourism and economic benefits during a key autumn weekend.
