Malaysia ended its 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign in Glasgow with eight gold, three silver, and five bronze medals, totaling 16 podium finishes. The haul marked the country's best Games performance since winning 12 golds at Delhi 2010 and exceeded Malaysia’s target of five golds set before the event [1, 2, 3].
The Malaysian team consisted of 59 athletes competing across eight sports, excluding badminton, diving, squash, and rhythmic gymnastics, which the country did not enter at Glasgow 2026 [1, 2]. Weightlifting delivered the greatest success for Malaysia, accounting for five of the eight gold medals. The five gold medalists in weightlifting were Mohamad Aniq Kasdan, Muhamad Aznil Bidin, Muhammad Erry Hidayat, Muhammad Hafizuddin Roslin, and Mohamad Syahmi Nor Ghazali. Their wins followed years of rebuilding in the sport after past doping controversies [1, 2].
Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang achieved his first Commonwealth Games gold in men’s keirin cycling after trying for 16 years. Judoka Amir Daniel Abdul Majeed took Malaysia's first Commonwealth judo gold in the men’s under-81-kilogram category. Meanwhile, Datuk Abdul Latif Romly added a Commonwealth Games gold to his prior Paralympic and world championship titles [1, 2].
Malaysia finished 10th in the overall medal standings at the Glasgow Games [3]. On August 4, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim publicly congratulated the Malaysian contingent, praising their fighting spirit and determination. He said, "Alhamdulillah, my heartfelt congratulations to the entire Malaysian contingent for competing with great pride and displaying extraordinary fighting spirit at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Thank you to the coaches, officials, support staff and all Malaysians who have continuously prayed for the success of the national contingent. Well done, Malaysia’s sporting heroes." [3]
Malaysia’s next major international competition is expected to further test its athletes’ form after the success recorded at Glasgow 2026.
