Selangor has declared a special public holiday for all federal and state civil servants on September 1, 2026, to celebrate its overall victory at the 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma) [1, 2]. The announcement came on August 24 during the Sukma closing ceremony in Selangor by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari [1, 2].
The holiday is granted under Subsection 9(1) of the Holidays Act 1951 (Act 369), which allows the state government to designate public holidays [1]. Datuk Dr Ahmad Fadzli Ahmad Tajuddin explained the law empowers state authorities to declare special or additional holidays for the state [1]. He added the victory is expected to encourage sporting culture and inspire Selangor residents to excel in sports [1].
Selangor’s contingent exceeded expectations at the 2026 Sukma Games by winning 101 gold, 73 silver, and 71 bronze medals, surpassing their target of 80 golds [1, 2]. This marks Selangor’s 10th overall Sukma title, with previous wins in 1988, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2013, and 2016 [1, 2]. The state government also encouraged private employers to consider giving employees the day off on September 1, depending on operational requirements [1, 2].
Meanwhile, the Perlis contingent reported a record performance at 2026 Sukma, winning 17 gold, 7 silver, and 18 bronze medals—totaling 42 medals, their best ever showing [3]. Perlis athletes set a games record in shot put, and their weightlifting team emerged as overall champions for that event [3].
Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah held a press conference on August 26 outlining plans to boost future performance by focusing on talent development, high-performance training, coaching, sports science, facilities, and athlete welfare [3]. He said, "The state government will continue to focus on talent development, high-performance training programmes, coaching, sports science, facilities, and athletes’ welfare to ensure that this performance can be further enhanced in the future" [3]. The Perlis government also plans a presentation ceremony after Para Sukma Selangor 2026 to discuss incentives for athletes [3].
Selangor’s special public holiday on September 1 provides official recognition for the state’s sports achievement and allows civil servants to celebrate the milestone firsthand [1, 2].
