Malaysia and Singapore will officially launch the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) master plan in December 2026 during the Annual Leaders' Retreat hosted by Malaysia [1, 2, 3, 4]. The unveiling will be jointly conducted by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong [1, 2, 3, 4].

Ahead of the launch, a meeting of the Johor-Singapore Cooperation Ministerial Committee (JSCMC) is scheduled for November 2026. The committee is co-chaired by Malaysia’s Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir and Singapore's National Development Minister Chee Hong Tat [1, 2, 3, 4]. Economy Minister Akmal said the retreat’s agenda will focus on launching the JS-SEZ master plan, underscoring the governments’ commitment to the project [2].

The JS-SEZ has attracted RM76.98 billion in approved investments in 2025, with 57% of projects already under implementation, highlighting its growing economic importance [3]. Akmal emphasized maintaining investor confidence and strong cooperation with Singapore to attract more investments, noting, "I think we cannot get too caught up in the issue, as the focus at the level of the Ministry of Economy is to continue to build the strength and confidence of investors; thus, the cooperation with Singapore will continue to remain strong and healthy" [4].

Amid geopolitical uncertainties, Malaysia sees an opportunity to position the JS-SEZ as a preferred investment destination for both domestic and foreign investors. Akmal remarked, "The current geopolitical situation remains unstable, and this gives Malaysia an advantage in positioning the JS-SEZ as a preferred destination for investors from within and outside the country" [3].

Separately, Batu Pahat in Johor has been chosen as the pilot city for the launch of the national-level Targeted Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) programme in 2026. Plans are underway to expand the programme to 12 additional districts [2, 4].

The Malaysian government will also maintain its focus on ensuring stable energy supplies to support ongoing economic activity, especially given potential disruptions to shipping routes in the Strait of Malacca. Akmal stressed, "The government will continue to focus on maintaining the stability of the country’s energy supply to ensure economic activity continues" [1].

The next key step is the JSCMC meeting planned for November 2026. It will shape preparations ahead of the JS-SEZ master plan launch at the Annual Leaders' Retreat the following month [1, 2, 3, 4].
